Future of military leaders to be decided in Lisbon
In Lisbon the Armed Forces Movement met in emergency session to decide on transferring power to Communist-backed leaders. Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves backed plans for a leftist slate and a possible three or six member junta while the army supports him. A new non partisan cabinet may form next week with Gen Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho likely as deputy prime minister.

Thomson warns governors over grant delays in New England
New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson threatened to sue in federal court if future grants approved by the New England Regional Commission are again delayed by commission staff. He cited a $75,000 transportation grant for jet service to New Hampshire’s North Country that was postponed amid a federal audit of a railroad study funded by the commission and conducted for the Heritage Foundation. Vermont Governor Salomon demanded inquiry into the study, while governors agreed to consider staff checks with individual leaders when delays occur.
