South Africa to start color TV in 1976 with 5 hours daily
Johannesburg reports that South Africa plans a five hour daily color broadcast starting Jan 1, 1976. Test programs began May 5 in Johannesburg and Pretoria to test reception and train staff. Critics praised picture quality but faulted lack of inspiration and behind the scenes skill. Prices for sets reached over $1,500 with fierce dealer competition and some regulatory actions limiting free viewings. The broadcaster aims 50 percent local content including five hours of sports weekly and features BBC Civilisation and Cooke America.
