Jets Press North Viet Nam In Wide War Action

U S Marines fought a five hour battle with North Vietnamese troops in the northwestern corner of South Viet Nam with moderate casualties. Air combat over North Viet Nam involved MIG 17 fighters and F105 Thunderjets in a bloodless draw. The U S reports 561 Communist deaths and 542 probable kills in Operation Hastings as Marine units face three regiments of the 324th Bravo division. A total of 305 U S warplanes have been lost since 1961 with 110 more losses in South Viet Nam.

Navy Pilot Escapes North Viet Captors

A U S Navy pilot escaped from North Vietnamese captors and reached American hands. Spokesmen said the lieutenant, shot down over North Viet Nam, evaded capture for more than 20 days before rescue by an Air Force helicopter. The incident marks the first reported successful escape from the North.

Senator Dodd Denies Flight Expense Allegation

Senator Thomas J. Dodd rejected claims by former aide James P. Boyd that he charged three air fares for a 1964 Los Angeles speech. Nasser rejects American aid linked to liberty and summit

President Gamel Abdel Nasser declared the UAR would not sell political freedom for renewed U.S. food aid and said Egypt would skip the Arab summit set for September in Algiers. He warned against cooperating with reactionary regimes and criticized American actions in Vietnam. Observers doubted the summit would occur with Syria Iraq and Yemen likely boycotting.

Senate Whacks Aid Bill

Washington UPI reports a rebellious Senate voted 51 to 31 to cut $42 million from the $700 million foreign economic aid package for backing military aid. The cut followed an earlier $250 million reduction from development loans, totaling $292 million in floor reductions.
