Pedometers Help Farmers Detect Cows In Heat
Research by Dr. Charles A. Kiddy of the USDA shows pedometers strapped to dairy cows reveal activity spikes during estrus, enabling timely artificial insemination. In a Beltsville study, 40 cows averaged fourfold activity increases during heat, allowing breeding the same day or next morning. Further testing and electronic monitoring are planned for diverse conditions.
