Space Center Houston reports Apollo astronauts Armstrong Aldrin and Collins completed the first lunar surface expedition. Armstrong and Aldrin slept in the Eagle while preparatory activities commenced for the ascent from the moon at 1:53 p.m. EDT, with Collins circling above in the Columbia.
The lunar module Eagle lifted off Tranquillity Base joining the command module on its 23rd lunar orbit at 1 54 p m. Armstrong and Aldrin gathered about 80 pounds of lunar samples during a 2 hour 11 minute walk, spoke to President Nixon, and sent live TV images as NASA officials praised the smooth mission under lunar gravity.
Over the weekend three people died in crashes across New York and Vermont. Dr. Raymond Harris 38 of Landgrove Vermont was killed when his 1967 Volvo left Town Road 4 and rolled, Dr Clifford Harwood at the scene, and removal authorized to Brewster Funeral Home. Paul Langlois 22 formerly of Bennington now Hartford Conn died driving a 1967 Pontiac GTO after a left road exit went off into a tree. Edward Deinkelman 40 of Westfield Mass died when his car left the Bennington Troy road and rolled onto him. A small private plane crashed near Michael Kidd in Bondville Vermont, three aboard escaped. Marvin Wolf 32 and Frederick Kantor 41 escaped after plane hit trees. Marvin Wolf seriously hurt with rib injuries. Several other minor incidents occurred including a three car crash at Routes 67 and 22 in North Hoosick and additional accidents on Vermont routes 67A and U.S. 7 with minor injuries and no injuries reported.
Sen Edward M Kennedy was charged with leaving the scene of an auto crash in which a secretary was killed. Kennedy was absent from the Duke's County Courthouse as Police Chief Arena filed the complaint. A July 28 hearing was set after a lawyer petitioned for it.
Jodrell Bank tracked Luna 15 as it neared the Sea of Tranquillity where Apollo 11 landed. Officials say a rocket blast altered orbit and suggest the craft may try to spy on or assist the American astronauts if needed.
