Lane Testifies As Defense Witness In Murder Trial
Ronald Francis Lane testified he accompanied Rose E. Thibodeau to Buck Hill on June 21 1966 and that she proposed marriage before events led to her death. Lane said he cannot recall the last moments and told his 17 year old brother he thought he had killed her, while pleading insanity. The case proceeded as the defense opened its witnesses on the fifth day of the trial after the state rested.

U S Jets Down Three MIGs In Haiphong Dogfight
UPI dispatch says U S jets downed three MIGs and possibly a fourth in the first air battle in six weeks near Haiphong. South Vietnamese troops killed 240 Communists fleeing after a Marine amphibious assault south of the DMZ as Marines pushed from the sea with about 2,000 Leathernecks in action. Heavy fighting continued as two battalions of North Vietnamese troops were trapped between blocking forces on the coast between Hue and Quang Tri.

Algerian Court Delays Tshombe Extradition Ruling Again
Algerian Supreme Court postponed its decision on extraditing former Congo Premier Moishe Tshombe to Kinshasa. Shaftsbury Cyclist Flung 100 Feet After Car Hit
Shaftsbury 16 year old bicyclist Carl Bouplon was struck on U S 7 in front of Elwell's Diner at 5 40 pm Thursday. He landed on the hood of the car and was thrown at least 100 feet into a lawn. He suffers a fractured left leg possible head injury and facial and chest abrasions. The driver Lawrence Cole 37 of North Bennington Road cut his forehead when his car hit a pole and was treated then released. Police gave no speed estimate. Bouplon is in fair condition at Putnam Memorial Hospital.

Two Durham Negroes Shot After Peaceful Demonstration
Two young Black residents were shot after a peaceful protest in Durham North Carolina as National Guardsmen were sent home. The march to City Hall drew 200 protesters amid tense confrontations with white hecklers and a dog threat. Both victims were wounded but not seriously.

Probers Seek Cause Of Fatal Plane Crash
Federal investigators question Asheville Hendersonville tower operators and 60 witnesses in the collision of a Cessna 310 and Piedmont jet over North Carolina. NTSB says 82 died, including Navy Secretary John T. McNaughton and his wife. The 74 passengers and five crew on Piedmont 219 from Atlanta to Washington were killed. 11 identified so far. The crash occurred after conflicting landing instructions as the airliner and small plane converged near the airport.
