Inoculations Ordered Across Five States for Sleeping Sickness in Horses
Animal health officials from Texas Oklahoma New Mexico Arkansas and Louisiana ordered mandatory horse vaccinations and planned 400 mile insecticide spread along the Texas Gulf Coast to curb a sleeping sickness epidemic. The disease has killed over 820 Texas horses and infected 1 070, with dozens of humans showing flu like symptoms. The outbreak, first found June 29 in the U S, has spread toward Houston and into rural south central Texas, with unconfirmed cases in Louisiana and the Texas Oklahoma border.
