Lane Statements To Police Considered
MANCHESTER The first questions of admissible evidence were settled in the second degree murder trial of Ronald Francis Lane. Judge Larrow allowed the state to present portions of Lane's statements to officers made after his arrest on June 23. Defense argued the confession was inadmissible for lack of proper rights advisement under Miranda. Lane, 26, is charged with strangling Rose E. Thibodeau, 42, on June 21 last year and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Tests showed Lane admitted to the slaying after arrest at the Deer Park along U.S. 7 in Bennington. Corroborating testimony by Mooney, Jones, and LaCount supported the statements, though Larrow ruled Lane's answers while en route to Shaftsbury inadmissible. The ruling follows the Miranda framework but allows some statements as voluntary. See LANE Page 24, Col. 4
