Utility ordered to halt pollution at Burlington plant

The Burlington Electric Department must stop emissions from its 30,000 kilowatt coal and natural gas power plant by February 1 under a federal Clean Air Act order. The EPA move aligns with a Vermont Air Quality Board variance, funding largely from a bond issue and grants to install pollution controls. Plant officials expect full compliance and cite a reduction in particulate emissions from about 265 pounds per hour to 20–30 pounds.
