Incumbents Rebound as Bennington Board Selections Hold
Incumbents on the merged Bennington School District board won decisive margins Tuesday over first time challengers. Three incumbents Allen Riddle Sleeman captured three seats with three year terms. Pello Shea won two seats for two years. Knapp and Pelsue earned one year terms. The new board also chose Sleeman as chairman and Riddle as vice chairman with Knapp as clerk. The district unionizes July 1, combining Bennington Graded and Greater Bennington districts.

William Henry Whalen a 51 year old retired Army lieutenant colonel and former Joint Chiefs of Staff aide was charged by a federal grand jury with conspiring to sell atomic, missile and bomber secrets to two former Soviet Embassy staffers between 1959 and 1963. He was arrested in Virginia, freed on 15000 dollar bond, and faces possible death penalty if convicted. The case links to two Russians identified as Sergei Edemski and Mikhail Shumaev, who have since left the United States.
