Exposition to Open on Schedule After Grandstand Fire
ESSEX JUNCTION The Champlain Valley Exposition will start as planned on August 30 despite a Sunday fire that destroyed the grandstand area. General Manager Harris Drury said temporary bleachers are being readied to house spectators for trotting and pacing races and livestock judging. Burlington reports of housing discrimination against Negroes surfaced at a Burlington Lions Club meeting led by Rev Edward Fitzsimons. He noted about 70 Negroes live in the Greater Burlington area with 45 in the local NAACP, calling bias an obstacle to social life though offering few details. Fitzsimons also serves as president of the Vermont Civil Rights Union.

Aiken Probes Champlain Waterway Depths and Industry Plans
Senator George D. Aiken reported an inquiry from a Mid Atlantic state about locating an industrial plant in New England on the Champlain Waterway. He noted questions on Richelieu River drafts, Albany linkage depths, and Vermont port availability, stressing that only a 12 foot depth would attract industry and that current depth limits usage. The Champlain Waterway improvement study by the International Joint Commission is due a report next fall.
