Determined woman fights to keep Harlem Valley trains running
MILLERTON, N.Y. Mrs. Gerald Carson president of the Harlem Valley Transportation Association leads a campaign to halt 138 freight line abandonments totaling 1,033 miles in 11 states and two Canadian provinces. A Sept 11 hearing before Federal Judge John A. Fullam is set in Philadelphia, with an related NYS DOT public hearing in Saranac Lake on a Remsen to Lake Placid line. Carson, a former journalist, claims officials pay lip service to rail preservation while railroads lose money, and she asserts the need for a coordinated transportation plan.
