Necessity Hearings Set for U S Route 7 Phase in Bennington

Landowners along the proposed U S Route 7 segment from Hunt Street in Bennington to south of Shaftsbury face a final chance this summer to delay or alter plans for the 10.5 million expressway. Bennington County Court will schedule a necessity hearing in late August or September to decide if construction is required. If approved, the department will condemn property and set compensation by fair market values, with appeals possible to the Highway Board and then a jury trial. The project includes a North Bennington spur, a West Kocher Drive extension, and a later Beltline to relieve village traffic, with timing dependent on funding and court decisions.

New Route 7 Necessity hearings planned next month

The project outlines a southern segment of the new U S Route 7 starting just north of Deer Park on Hunt Street. A Kocher Drive extension and a westward connector near WBTN will meet old Route 7 then Route 67A, with limited access except connectors. The highway would extend north toward Shaftsbury, connect to old Route 7, and eventually reach Manchester to cross into Route 9 toward New York State.
