U S Jets Destroy North Viet Torpedo Boats

U S Navy jets from the carrier Constellation destroyed four North Vietnamese torpedo boats off Haiphong with Zuni rockets and Bullpup missiles. The three hour raid followed earlier attacks and missions in the Tonkin Gulf and near Haiphong, as pilots struck boats and fuel depots amid heavy ground fire.

Towns Agree To Appeal Hospital Court Decree

A majority of towns at a Bennington County indigent committee meeting backed its case against the Putnam Memorial Hospital trustee. Henry F. Black of White River Junction represented the committee in pursuing the appeal against the hospital decree.

Board Approves Applications For Vermont School Projects

Vermont board of education approved 13 school building applications totaling over 800000 dollars. First awards include 452200 for North Country Union High School Newport and 252766 for Mt Mansfield Union High School. People’s Academy Morrisville received 42600 for additions. Six other projects estimated at 65000 with 30 percent state share. Vermont Supreme Court reversed a chancery ruling on indigent care tied to the Putnam Deed of Gift. Black lamented the decision as an error and anticipated rehearing. Also reports on U.S. bombing in Vietnam with Marines killing 25 Viet Cong near Da Nang and a B52 dawn strike in Chau Doc province.

Maryland Prison Riot Shuts Maryland Penitentiary

Riot at downtown Maryland Penitentiary in 90 degree heat prompted police to flood Baltimore to quell clashes. 25 to 50 inmates looted and set three fires including a license shop and the commissary. two firefighters injured. Vernon Peppersack called it the worst in 29 years. fires grew to a 10 alarm blaze before containment late Friday.

No Early End Seen To Airline Strike

The largest U S airline strike began with 35,400 Machinists walking off at 6 am in a wage and fringe benefits dispute involving United, Eastern, Trans World, National and Northwest. Government mobilization aimed to keep mails and Viet Nam supplies moving as talks planned for 10 am Saturday under Assistant Labor Secretary Reynolds.

Oil Tanks Explode In New Jersey Fire

PERTH AMBOY N J UPI Oil tanks exploded right and left in Hess Oil Co tank farm sending a river of fire across Arthur Kill channel toward Port Socony on the New York side. Fire crews from Manhattan Brooklyn and New Jersey fought the blaze as 55 gallon drums were catapulted into the water. Five families evacuated on Staten Island as flames threatened the Socony installation and shipping. Fire expected to burn through night. traffic jam built on the New Jersey Turnpike as smoke drew onlookers.

Injunction Issued In ICC Ruling In Vermont Rail Case

Federal judge Ernst W. Gibson granted a temporary injunction to block the Boston and Maine Railroad from discontinuing passenger service between Springfield Massachusetts and White River Junction Vermont. The order followed a petition by Chester Ketcham for the Vermont Public Service Board amid ICC approval to abandon the line. If the ICC ruling stands, Vermont loses its last passenger service. The PSB may seek a 90 day halt or escalate to the ICC, with Gibson proposing a three judge court to hear Vermont challenges.
