Flooding across Vermont and New Hampshire has produced early estimates of 6 million dollars in damage, with private and municipal facilities totaling 47 million in Vermont and 13.1 million in New Hampshire. The disaster caused one death, disrupted roads, triggered evacuations, and imperiled crops and farms while tourism ads urged visitors that most damage was on secondary roads.
Governor Thomas Salmon pressed for flood plain zoning after noting the 1973 legislature did well but did not pass his top priority bill. He warned that flood-prone river banks threaten public safety and urged a management program tied to strong land use laws, saying people must stay away from rivers.
A federal judge rejected Common Cause's effort to hold Maurice Stans in contempt for failing to surrender full pre April 7 1972 Nixon reelection committee records. CRP offered partial accounting, judge urged a list of documents, and related Watergate notes noted. A stay was requested to compile and submit records to House clerks under the Federal Corrupt Practices Act.
A propane tanker explosion near the Dexol plant in Kingman Arizona ignited a fireball engulfing a factory, a dozen businesses, part of U S Route 66, and scores of people. The Bennington Drug Council voted to install a crisis hotline and recruit volunteers to staff and publicize the service. Alan Prager of Manpower outlined costs including a $75 deposit, $10.50 monthly fee, and $32 installation, with hopes to secure funds by waiving the deposit and enlisting 12 local donors for a year. Prager heads a volunteers effort to screen applicants and train operators, stressing the line provides factual help without moralizing.

The AEC calls the charges untrue and stresses safety measures.
Shaftsbury's planning board faced a state guideline shift on Act 250 permits for borrow pits tied to Route 7 bypass. The Morse pit, on rural residential land, would require a permit under Criterion 10 if the town plan is violated. Montpelier officials argued pre-existing highway exemptions, complicating local approvals and potentially forcing town plan changes.
The item recalls the town’s past mood for civic improvements with a 4,000 dollar traffic light plan noted in 1938 editorial, reflecting local optimism and fiscal stance as Bennington eyes upgrades and public projects.
