Vermont Agriculture Commissioner Leo O'Brien issued an emergency rule effective today to curb undulant fever spread in dairy herds after a Health Department report of a fourth human case, a two year old in northern Vermont. The rule bans sale of cattle not blood tested 15 days before sale, limited to dispersal sales among multiple owners.

United Press International reports oil companies raised gasoline prices ahead of Independence Day travel pushing regular to about 60 cents a gallon. White House said hikes were largely seasonal and aimed at recouping costs as dealers foresee further rises by Labor Day. Bennington selectmen approved reduced appropriations for the Vermont Dental Care Program and the town Tutorial Center after internal review. The tutorial center’s $6,000 budget was cut to $3,000 with a further $3,000 potential only if three full time Manpower employees are not renewed after July 31. The dental program was reduced from $5,000 to $3,000 amid concerns about oversight and future space needs. Axt noted space still awaits a final school district vote and the program includes free dental cleanings for 500 children. Unanimous approval was given for leasing two 1976 Ford sedans for police use.
Three year old Christopher Brian Whitman son of William J and Carol Whitman of Elm Street Manchester drowned Tuesday night in a swimming pool on Battenhill Lane Manchester Police said the youth was pulled from the pool around 730 pm and rushed to James P O Neil Arlington where he was pronounced dead Regional medical examiner Frank Harrigan was called The exact circumstances are under investigation and deemed accidental Whitman born March 28 1972 Bennington He is survived by his parents a brother William J II and grandparents Charles Hosley and Lee Hosley
SVSU and two other Vermont districts share a $100000 federal grant to develop comprehensive K12 career education programs. John E. Murray will direct a $17000 post. Loupts Edson Phelps and Clarence D. Truesdell sit on the executive committee. Grants funds will support coordinators, workshops, placement services, and community involvement to improve curriculum linking business and career planning. Murray announced job vacancies funded by the grant and solicited teacher suggestions for upcoming workshops.
