Boston committee files its plans for desegregation
The Boston School Committee filed its plan to desegregate via a voluntary busing program to be reviewed by U S District Court Judge W Arthur Garrity as part of five citywide proposals due by September. Garrity has set a February 3 deadline for other plans and hearings to begin next week. The plan includes racially mixed classrooms and 20 percent time in such settings with quotas by race, after three members were found in contempt for opposing mandatory busing. Governor Dukakis sought a 90 day halt on new school construction, but Anrig said it would not affect Springfield and Boston projects needed for integration.
