Saigon Names Cao Van Vien Defense Minister

Banks coast to coast lower interest rates

Banks from coast to coast cut lending rates from 6 percent to 5 3 4 percent following Chase Manhattan Bank’s move to 5 4 percent. Mellon National Bank and Trust Pittsburgh Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Bank of America San Francisco joined Chase with 5 3 4 percent while First National City Bank Manufacturers Hanover and Chemical Bank New York Trust aligned later. Chicago Snowstorm Paralyzes City With Looting and Shootings

A historic blizzard left Chicago and eight surrounding counties buried under 23 inches of snow. Marines Repel Night Battle as Communists Lose Helicopters

In a nightlong clash near the DMZ in South Vietnam, Communist forces shot down three Marine CH46 helicopters with Marine reinforcements rescuing a surrounded patrol. About 1,500 Marines fought near Da Nang, claiming 74 Viet Cong bodies. Marine casualties were light. Air strikes by B52 bombers and fighter planes backed ground actions, and Operation Cedar Falls ended in Saigon.

Essex Carrier Goes Aground Near San Juan Puerto Rico

The aircraft carrier Essex ran aground about five miles southeast of San Juan during training. Coast Guard reported no danger as four Navy tugs and two ships aided the 894 foot ship en route to Roosevelt Roads. The Essex earlier collided with the nuclear submarine Nautilus during Atlantic exercises and was repaired in Boston before returning to duty.

Mohawk Proposes Flights To Montreal From Albany

Mohawk Airlines asked the Civil Aeronautics Board to allow a new Montreal service via Albany and Burlington with two round trips daily aboard 48 passenger jets. The plan includes direct or connected service to New York, Pittsburgh, Providence and other upstate cities, aiming to start before Expo 67 opens in Montreal.
