Bennington reveals a practical newsprint recycling breakthrough with a paper sorter hailed by Boy Scouts Senate committee men mayors and waste officers across the country as a long awaited announcement promising cleaner waste handling and broader reuse of newsprint.
Edward H. Cumpston Jr of Monument Ave Bennington unveils a new device to sort newspapers from mixed waste for Garden State Paper Company. The machine uses whirling parts gravity and fans to separate Newsprint from magazines and other papers, reducing manual hand sorting.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird told the Senate Armed Services Committee that American ground forces will not be introduced in Cambodia and that Cambodians understand this. He said negotiations in Paris continue, but a negotiated settlement appears unlikely.
A Vermont legislature public hearing on Senator Frederick Fayette's plan for a legislative review of environmental laws drew limited support. Only Public Service Board Chairman Ernest W. Gibson III and lawyer John backed the resolution, while most state officials remained receptive.
Attorney General James M. Jeffords calls the Fayette plan disastrous. He warns it would leave Vermont defenseless against unwanted development if enacted. D. Carbine of Rutland lobbies for power companies as Gibson supports the bill’s thrust. Administration officials Mallary and Reed observed. Fayette’s Preston rebuttal follows on Page 18.
UPI reports East European sources say the USSR is ready to invoke the Brezhnev doctrine and invade Poland if labor unrest escalates into riots. Moscow fears further strikes could topple Edward Gierek, prompting a potential invasion from abroad to stabilize the region and deter spread to others.
The state may pay contractors at least 85 million more for losses from improper planning of the Albany South Mall project. The deficiency budget contemplates up to 150 million for equitable adjustments as delays and inflated costs push the total near 850 million. Governor Rockefeller’s budget notes delays blamed on state fault and project complexity.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield accuses the Nixon administration of distorting the Cooper Church Amendment and violating the spirit of the law by allowing U.S. air support and instructors in Cambodia. He urged quicker withdrawal and promised continued pressure on the administration to honor Congress’ aims.
Bennington Selectmen chair J Duncan Campbell tries to separate town and Y affairs. A letter from YMCA attorney Stephen H. Gilman says a Jan 12 meeting produced no assurances for creditors. A creditors’ meeting is planned, and it is unlikely the town will be asked for funds at March Town Meeting.
The Senate Interior Committee backed Morton for secretary of the interior after a 10 minute session. Morton pledged conflict free finances, safeguards for Alaskan permafrost with pipeline and road work, Indian participation, expanded voting rights to territories, and strong land restoration and public land zoning measures.
