Three Charleton men walk to safety from Mount Monadnock
JAFFREY New Hampshire UPI Three Charleton Massachusetts men Raymond Capellett 20 Steven Paquet 19 and Jeffrey Lefed dre 22 spent the night on ice encrusted Mount Monadnock and walked out to safety after dawn. They had built a fire to stay warm and, after hearing a snowmobile, followed tracks to a trail and down. Forty searchers scoured the mountain as winter conditions worsened with midteens temperatures and 25 to 30 mph winds. The trio were inadequately equipped for the icy crust and were aided by ice cleats to gain footholds. Local park officials noted a wife and two other women had accompanied them most of the ascent but turned back due to severe ice.

Rockefeller clean water plan faces laggard charge in Albany
In Albany Gov Rockefeller is urged to bolster his pure waters program as Sen Samuel Greenberg calls it weak with pollution cleanup at a standstill. He proposes a seven point 2.2 billion environmental bond plan creating a new ecological control department and regional authorities. The plan targets polluters, fees, and pollution control across air water and noise domains. The legislature is set to approve Rockefeller's 93.7 million deficiency budget with few changes, though scrutiny over capital projects continues, including a 19 million medical school at Stony Brook.
