Aiken Pushes Recreation Value in Champlain Waterway Study
Senator George D. Aiken urged the Army Corps of Engineers to include Champlain Basin recreational potential in the waterway feasibility study. He argued that opening Lake Champlain to barge traffic and shallow craft would boost resort use, boating, fishing, and vacation income, stressing the need to balance commerce with recreation. The Vermont senator cited Vermont skiing’s $40 million annual business and noted status reports focus on transport and cargo, not recreation. He reported sending the concern to Lt. Gen. Walter K. Wilson and Senator Allen J. Ellender, with status items on Victory Dam, Gaysville Dam, and the Connecticut River Basin study.
