The Supreme Court upheld that public high school students must receive notice and a chance to present their side before suspensions. The 5 to 4 decision requires informal hearings for up to 10 day suspensions, while denying full right to counsel or cross examination. Justice White stated a 10 day suspension is a serious event in a student's life. Justice Powell dissented, warning the ruling could hinder education and invite judicial intrusion.
