North Bennington directors bemoan unemployment tax rules
North Bennington School Board learned that under new state unemployment compensation rules the district must pay unemployment taxes on part of its payroll. The tax is 2 12 percent on the first 6 000 of all salaries, including teachers, estimated at more than 1 200 dollars annually. Teachers under contract returning next year will not be eligible for summer unemployment. those not returning may qualify. The board questioned retiree sick-leave costs and anticipated Blue Cross Blue Shield premium increases of at least seven percent. The district remains solidly in the black for the year, thanks to careful budgeting by Principal Philip Viereck. The board reaffirmed no transportation is provided to students, suggesting parents consider the BRTI mini-bus service. Nowak noted talks with Bennington College President Joseph S Murphy about token payments for housing students from which there is no tax revenue.
