Massive oil spill spreads along the Pacific coastline
The Standard Oil Oregon Standard tanker rupture spilled bunker oil along 60 miles of California coastline from San Francisco Bay to Pt Reyes. Volunteers battled to protect nesting sites of great blue herons and white egrets while cleaning hundreds of oiled birds and staging a pontoon bridge at Bolinas Lagoon to shield critical habitats. Estimates of spillage ranged from 500,000 to 1.9 million gallons as days of cleanup began.
