Bennington Man Dies in Dewey Street Fire
A second story apartment blaze on Dewey Street claimed the life of 19 year old George W. Hathaway Jr. of 111 Dewey St. Firefighters faced intense heat and smoke, found Hathaway and a cat in the front bedroom, and transported him to Putnam Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The cause was smoke inhalation. Fire crews from four companies battled the blaze for about three and a half hours as icy streets hampered access. The fire likely started from a couch in a middle room, with a cigarette blamed as a probable ignition. The wooden frame house owned by Louis Bellemare suffered heavy second floor damage.
