Life in Jerusalem Prized for Quiet Routine Amid Fear
A Life in Jerusalem reveals how daily life continues despite bombings and a siege. Shops reopen within hours, security checks are routine, and residents accept the threat as part of life, with Mayor Kollek noting Israelis work to get by and feel safer than New York in many ways. The piece contrasts dramatic attacks reported in media with ordinary streets, buses, and parks where people mingle and daily business proceeds. It highlights uniforms, armed guards, and bag inspections as normal, shaping a distinct social climate.
