The FBI opened an inquiry to find who erased part of a Nixon Watergate tape. Justice Department declined comment. Evidence points to a White House involvement during a 40 minute window on Oct 1, as Rose Mary Woods faced a possible operator error while a pedal kept the machine moving.
Washington officials say Nixon did not erase 18-44 minutes of a Watergate tape but offer little on what happened.
