FBI probes tape erasures in Watergate case

The FBI opened an inquiry to find who erased part of a Nixon Watergate tape. Justice Department declined comment. Evidence points to a White House involvement during a 40 minute window on Oct 1, as Rose Mary Woods faced a possible operator error while a pedal kept the machine moving.

White House denies Nixon erased key Watergate tape

Washington officials say Nixon did not erase 18-44 minutes of a Watergate tape but offer little on what happened. Spokesman Gerald Warren refused to comment beyond a Nixon lawyers statement that further testimony is pending and premature judgments are unwarranted. The panel seeks cause of a gap in Nixon Haldeman recording after the 1972 Democratic headquarters burglary.
