Rand Letter ends as Rand weighs self over culture
The piece notes Ayn Rand quitting her four page Ayn Rand Letter, citing cultural decline. It explores The Fountainhead, integrity, and violence as emblematic of modern dissent from Weatherman to IRA. It questions whether selfhood can exist without destroying others or oneself and hints Rand may write another novel.

Shaftsbury town offices seek addition at Cole Hall
Open letter to Shaftsbury taxpayers argues the town clerk's office is too small and poorly heated. It notes limited parking on busy Route 7 and proposes building an addition, suggesting Cole Hall as a solution with extra space from the nearby school addition. The plan includes a vault on the east side of Cole Hall and a fire escape roof platform.

Income tax for education debate and Vermont aid
The Banner letters discuss a proposed 10 percent cut in state aid to education by Speaker Tim O Connor. Vermont January 1976 aid losses, Gratiot-Tashman wealth based aid plans, and a push for local income tax to fund schools. A broad shift toward using personal income to measure town wealth is urged, with calls to enable local tax power and to devise a personal income based state aid formula. Senator Herbert Ogden Hartland supports a local income tax plan to separate school funding from property wealth.

Bicentennial Expenditures Questioned In Vermont
In regard to bicentennial expenditures, so far it has mostly been for choo choo trains and gravy trains, with tens of thousands going for planners of tracks that won't hum and promoters of loops and side wheelers. Taxpayers deserve a breakdown of how much of the 3 million dollars will go to administrators, officers, and out of state operators. A more imaginative commission could have enlightened Vermonters in 1976. MALVINE COLE Stratton. To the Editor of The Banner. The following is for Dianne Hall, Dorothy Haddad and the Bennington County Home Extension Groups.
