Court weighs union's fine in Springfield appeal

Superior Judge Harold Sylvester has taken under advisement a Springfield union's appeal to block a $5,000 contempt fine. Local 218 of the United Electrical Workers Union contends it was denied a jury trial after convictions for 36 alleged violations tied to a court injunction restraining picketing at Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield, strikebound since June. Negotiations with the company, stalled for over a month, aim to restart with federal mediators in Boston as union and company representatives meet Thursday.
