Rev. Allen Barnes of Redeemer Lutheran Church urged Henningtonians to recycle waste with wartime zeal, noting how Allied efforts saved strategic materials. He described progress in Bennington, delivery of how-to instructions, and urged offices and factories to join the drive while stressing landfill relief and environmental benefits.
The Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ calls on its 180 plus member churches to mark Dr. King’s birthday with themed worship aids and ministry programs. Vincent Pizzano was elected BCIC president at a noon Thursday meeting at Paradise restaurant to succeed Norman Greenberg. The group declined to rename itself Bennington County Development Corp, electing officers including William Dailey Jr and Clement Gilchrist, and naming directors for three years. A proposal to build a new 20 000 to 90 000 square foot speculative industrial building was discussed and may be revisited at the next quarterly directors’ meeting.
Beginning January 15 Beecher's Drugstore will open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store will be closed Sundays and holidays. The Arlington Fire and Light District annual meeting is set for Monday January 15 at 8 p.m. at Arlington Memorial High School.
Police report a minor accident Friday night in the Friendly’s parking lot on South Street. A vehicle owned by Thomas McKeown of Chapel Road rolled out of gear and struck a parked car owned by Lee Rosenberg of Williamstown Massachusetts. Both drivers were away from their cars. minor damage to the Rosenberg vehicle only.
Mrs. Theresa Mayer and her three sons have been granted a reprieve by landlords Mr. and Mrs. Mintrone in Dover. The couple will remain in their two bedroom attic apartment above the Country Store on Northside Drive rent free for January while they seek affordable housing after a fault in rent payment led to heat and power being cut. Mrs. Mintrone said the arrangement is to continue through the month and urged Mrs. Mayer to apply for Central Vermont service in her own name.
Four patients at the Vermont State Hospital filed a federal suit in Burlington seeking a ruling that Vermont involuntary admission statutes are unconstitutional. The suit, backed by Vermont Legal Aid, seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to halt further admissions until the case is heard. Judge Coffrin issued temporary rules for admissions pending the merits hearing.
The Vermont House approved a resolution to study rules impacting the Democratic and Republican parties. Rep. Brian Burns said rules do not formally address party caucuses or leadership elections. Speaker Walter Kennedy named the two leaders and Tim to a special committee to study party leadership posts.

District Court Eugenes L. DeCell 18 of Manchester Depot pleaded guilty Thursday to an amended charge of receiving stolen property for an incident Nov 3 in Sunderland. He originally faced breaking in by night. Judge Robert E. Cummings sentenced him Friday to a suspended sentence with probation until further order. He also faced a second charge of furnishing malt beverages to minors in Arlington on the same date. he pleaded guilty and received a concurrent suspended sentence and probation.

Montpelier announced Kathleen Futrell as director of Agency Planning and Health Commissioner Dr. Robert Aiken will serve as special advisor. Aiken, 63, leaves 23 years as health commissioner to lead state efforts for improved health care systems and delivery in a government drive to address rising costs and welfare-linked health challenges. Davis emphasized the need for a full-time medical expert to guide health programs amid ongoing reforms. He met Friday with Dr. Robert Coon of Vermont Health System Inc. to discuss new delivery efforts.
The Department of Health Education and Welfare awards 747,137 dollars to Albany Regional Medical Program at Albany Medical College of Union University. Vermont Rep. Mallary announces the grant, continuing six years of support to improve diagnosis, treatment and care for over two million people in the Albany region and adjacent parts of southern Vermont and western Massachusetts, focusing on heart disease cancer kidney disorders and related health issues.
