Aiken urges third Viet Nam option let war die of old age
UPI reports Senator George D. Aiken of Vermont, a member of the Mansfield mission, suggests a third alternative in Viet Nam beyond negotiation or continued fighting. He favors sustaining support to South Vietnam while allowing the conflict to fade if possible, noting China and Russia pose uncertain risks and criticizing bombing in the north. He also warns against overestimating the impact of time, citing China’s influence and the general global anxiety over regional dominance. A separate Letchworth note mentions a home entertaining course in the local grammar school evenings.
