In White Mountain National Forest heavy snow sparked avalanches outside normal paths. An avalanche on Mt. Madison covered 75 acres, 35 acres were cleared, a mile long and a quarter mile wide, toppling trees. Skiers and hikers were warned to avoid posted avalanche zones and gullies.
