In Montpelier the state house paused three days after convening as a 56 member canvassing board conducts the recount of over 121000 votes from the Nov 6 Keyser Hoff gubernatorial race in the reception room.

Father locks five children as home burns in California

Police say William Carrell set the house afire after locking his wife and five children in their rooms to gain the impression she neglected them. The 30 year old was arraigned on arson and attempted murder charges. None of the children aged 1½ to 9 were harmed in the blaze that destroyed the Carrell home.

Tornado Strikes Spring Hill Tennessee Wrecks Town

A tornado ripped into Spring Hill's business district shortly after midnight causing heavy damage. At least eight buildings were wrecked and half of Spring Hill High School demolished. National Guard units were deployed to guard against looting as rescue operations began. The Tennessee Orphanage home near town reported no injuries among its 180 children.

Navy P2V patrol plane crashes near Kodiak runway

A twin engine Navy P2V patrol plane carrying 12 crew members crashed while approaching the Kodiak Naval Air Station runway. Five survivors were hospitalized in serious condition after the aircraft struck Womens Mountain about 1000 feet from the end of the strip.
