Light snow developing today but tapering off tonight with highs in the 20s and lows from 5 to 15. Friday will be variable with snow flurries and colder temperatures. Yesterday’s high 21 and low 8, current 7 am reading 16. Ground snow totaling 11 inches with a trace this morning. Sunset 4 33, sunrise 7 25.
At a brief Bennington School District meeting the Roy misuse case and the selection of three BSD reps plus one advisory rep to form the new South and Southwest Supervisory Union were discussed. Roy’s repayment remains unpaid though partial pledges were promised earlier. The board directed action through Attorney Clark and considered paying the Diner's Club bills while planning for the transition to the new union.
Gov. Deane C. Davis proposals include a 4 per cent general sales tax, higher sin taxes, and an increase in corporate and splinter levies. Aimed at covering a projected 1970 budget deficit, the plan adds a food tax credit and income tax credits, with emphasis on education funding and property tax relief for elderly and rural landowners.
United Press International reports Lebanon snubbed an Israeli appeal for regional peace after Israel’s Dec 29 Beirut Airport raid. New premier Rashid Karami, named by President Helou, vows a hawkish cabinet, stronger army drafts, and fortified border outposts. Jordan says Israeli patrols were forced back in a 20 minute cross river duel with no casualties. Egypt’s Nasser gains strong ARS votes in national assembly. Karami succeeds Yafi amid defense breakdown questions.
