Union high school plan gains district approval

The Prudential Committee approved consolidating Grades 7-12 from Greater Bennington Schools with neighboring districts into a union high school program. A regional junior high program may use Bennington High School, with a spring presentation to area taxpayers.

Bus Driver Charged With Manslaughter in 1961 Fatal Crash

Freeman H. Lowell 25 of Mendon Mass was arraigned in West Ossipee Municipal Court on a manslaughter charge after a collision on Route 16 near Tamworth killed three Manchester steelworkers. Bail set at 5000 with a Jan 27 probable cause hearing. Lowell, six bus passengers injured, victims identified as Lionel St Laurent 35 George Sullivan 40 Francis Coyne 59. The crash raises the 1962 toll to seven.

Fire damages slight at Rockwood Hill mill

A minor fire occurred at the Rockwood Co. Inc. mill on East Main Street just before noon. Village Fire Department extinguished the blaze in 15 minutes with no injuries reported. First Assistant Fire Chief Richard Hollister said welding equipment used to repair a spinning mule ignited lint and floor debris.

Trustees of the Village of Old Bennington confront a long running dispute over a private extended service line on Fairview Street now serving multiple homes. The deteriorating two inch pipe has caused leaks and mounting repair costs totaling over $5,000, with liability shared by the Old Village and several homeowners.

New Village Water Line Reaches Molly Stark School

completion of the first major phase of an eight inch water line to Molly Stark School on Willow Road announced by Bennington Wheeler of the Village Water Department. Burgess Bros. of Bennington were the contractors. The school now receives water with 80 to 160 pounds pressure. work began in November across 2301 feet of pipe. A further 600 feet of pipe to Clark's Woods and Old Bennington is planned this spring. A proposed 20,000 dollar town appropriation will cover off property costs. the district will pay on its property. The project is the village school district’s first major water line expansion. The Bennington Flats area will not be allowed private connections to the line.
