Jeffords renews national bottle deposit bill in Congress
Rep. James Jeffords introduces a national beverage container deposit system. The plan would require a five cent deposit on steel and aluminum cans and single use bottles, with returns for recycling. Jeffords claims jobs will grow and consumer prices not rise, and energy savings equal to 50 million barrels of oil yearly. Momentum from Maine Michigan laws aids chances. Vermont and Oregon also have similar deposits.

Vermont faces cut of 50,000 grant to VCIC program
The Governor's Justice Commission terminated a $50,000 federal grant aimed at compiling statewide crime statistics, ending a SEAA-funded program that had brought in over $162,000 since 1970 and led to five VCIC layoffs, including a full time statistician. Officials blame inadequate data collection and say manpower planning is hampered. The 1977 legislature will be asked to restore funding to reactivate the effort.
