16 Freight Cars Derail at Fair Haven Creates Spill

FAIR HAVEN UP I work crews of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad were to arrive today with cranes to start lifting 16 derailed freight cars onto the tracks. The 16 cars were part of a 68 car Boston and Maine freight train that derailed Monday. A tank car carrying butyl acetate cracked spilling chemical on the ground. Police said there was no real fear of explosion if temperatures stay under 72 degrees. Authorities roped off a city block area with no evacuations planned. A witness reported dirt slid from under the tracks before derailment, broken rail and loose dirt cited as causes. The B&M freight was enroute from Mechanicville New York to Boston on D&H tracks when derailment occurred halfway up Vermonts western border. B&M sought alternate routes as tracks between Mechanicville and Boston remained uncleared after a similar derailment last week in the Hoosac Tunnel at North Adams Massachusetts. The other cars carried flour and salt. Butyl acetate is used in making solvents for floor finishes.
