Arlington Two-Year Selectman Candidates Debate Local Issues
Arlington contenders Steven E. Bliss and Robert V. Jones emphasize education and community needs. Bliss backs school additions, safer sidewalks, and cautious police staffing, preferring deputy sheriffs over a full-time officer. Jones urges immediate use of Humphrey’s Garage for a town office, cites central location and space, and highlights sewage treatment and school control concerns while stressing service to residents and transparency.

Canfield Library seeks increased town appropriations
Arlington officials seek higher support for the Canfield Library as space constraints grow. Expansion has added shelves and zones for reference and juveniles, with 32,000 books circulated last year and a per capita lead in the state. Towns Arlington Sandgate and Sunderland face higher appropriations totaling 650 more, plus nearly 3,000 still to raise by donations and projects. Martha Canfield, Miss Mattie, helped found the library in 1803 with a subscription basis, evolving through community supports and a 1959 gift funding book purchases until 1965.
