A 38-ton propane gas tanker overturned on Route 9 near Searsburg causing 15 homes to evacuate for three hours and closing the road for more than 18 hours. The driver, 21-year-old Duane P. Young of Baldwinsville New York, was in critical condition at Albany Medical Center with head back and leg injuries. The truck carried 8500 gallons of highly flammable gas and skidded through 150 feet of guardrail before a 60-foot embankment fall. Route detours via Sleepy Hollow Road and Route 8 kept cars away while crews planned a lengthy transfer to another tank truck. Witnesses described the crash and rescue as responders worked to unload gas and secure the scene.
