Knowland dies from gunshot at Russian River retreat
Former U.S. Senator and Oakland Tribune publisher William F. Knowland died from a personal safety related gunshot wound to the head. Autopsy found the weapon a .32 caliber automatic pistol, recovered under water near his body. Authorities ruled out foul play and noted no suicide finding. Knowland, 65, died Saturday at his summer home 75 miles north of San Francisco after celebrations marking his newspaper’s centennial. He had been a longtime California political figure and GOP leader.
