MIT researchers propose red phosphorus fuels Jupiter’s red spot
MIT scientists John Lewis and Ron Prinn argue ultraviolet irradiation of phosphine in Jupiter’s atmosphere could produce red phosphorus, offering a non organic explanation for the red spot. The team’s findings, presented at an American Astronomical Society meeting, challenge ideas of organic chemistry driving Jupiter’s colors. They suggest Titan may hold clues to planetary atmospheric chemistry.
