Russians Refuse to Relay Distress Call Seize Vessel Incident

Newport skipper Capt John Francis Jr says a party of about 19 Russian fishing boats tried to seize his 63 foot trawler Ruth and Helen after a tangled net ensnared the propeller off Montauk Point New York. A Russian officer demanded ownership papers and to relay his location to the Coast Guard but refused. Francis and crew later rigged a sail to signal the coast guard once radio was repaired and contacted authorities. The incident left Francis and his son Richard aboard with crewman Richard Chase aboard another vessel Group said masters refused orders citing vessel authority and questioned reporting procedures. The mother ship reportedly remained distant during the standoff.

Woman Survives Shaftsbury Ice Drive Into Pond

A Sharon, Connecticut woman, Kay Prindle, escaped a likely icy grave Friday night when her car skidded on ice and plunged into a small pond at U.S. 7 and Vermont 67 in Shaftsbury. Passerby Clarence Reed pulled her from the water and she was warmed at Trooper Elrick’s home before police checked for others in the submerged car. she suffered a cut above an eye and a bruised knee but was otherwise uninjured.
