Route 7 project okayed by federal judges 2 1

The U S Second Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a December 1974 ruling and, by a 2 1 margin, found the Route 7 environmental impact statement satisfactory under a NEPA amendment allowing states to prepare statements with federal supervision. The decision may free federal funds and boost highway construction from Shaftsbury town line to Manchester along the Green Mountain National Forest.

Scranton picked for U N post

President Ford plans to appoint former Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton as U S Ambassador to the United Nations to replace Patrick Moynihan. Moynihan resigns Feb 2 and will return to Harvard. Scranton has Eisenhower era service and a Nixon Middle East envoy stint.

Carbide Wins Unanimous Bennington Expansion Approval

Union Carbide Corp. won full Planning Commission approval to expand its Bennington battery plant. By late next year staffing could rise from 650 by 50 as six new production lines come online. A temporary layoff of about 130 workers is planned when the Scott Street energizer facility closes in April.

Chemical Fabrics chief John Cook dies in crash

John Cook 58 of Riegelsville Pa president of Chemical Fabrics Corp in Bennington and founder of Warren Wire Co in Pownal was killed when his twin engine plane crashed near Salem N Y on approach to Bennington airport. FAA investigates cause. Cook helped build Warren Wire from 1947 onward and later started Chemical Fabrics in 1968.

Peron will not seek reelection in Argentina

Kissinger visit sparks rock attack on Lima embassy

In Lima, about 30 demonstrators pelted the U.S. Embassy during Henry Kissinger’s visit, smashing eight plate glass windows as security guards fired warning shots. Police arrested several protesters as Kissinger left for Brazil after praising Peru’s military leaders.

State Senate sustains ratification of ERA

Vermont state Senate defeated a resolution to rescind the 1973 ERA ratification by 17 to 11. The measure drew a 42 vote adverse Senate Judiciary Committee report. Opposition warned the ERA would impose duties on women, while supporters argued it mirrors U.S. 14th Amendment protections. Senator Esther Sorrell, the only woman Democrat, voted no.
