Hughes abandons Bahamas hideaway
Howard Hughes has left his Bahamian Paradise Island hotel suite after a year and a half in seclusion. A Britannia Beach Hotel official said Hughes departed Tuesday afternoon and staff followed later. Spokesman Dick Hannah said Hughes may not announce his destination, denying reports staff were ordered off the island. Hotel officials expect the ninth floor to be ready for regular guests. Hughes has not publicly appeared since the 1950s and no return plans were disclosed.
