Boston abortion case to be decided by jury

The Boston trial of Dr. Kenneth C. Edelin pairs prosecution and defense over the meaning of the case. The judge will instruct the jury at 10 a.m. before 12 jurors deliberate on whether Edelin is innocent or guilty of manslaughter of a fetus in a 1973 abortion. The defense says the case centers on abortion rights and medical judgment, while the prosecution frames it as manslaughter. The state argues the fetus was in the process of birth when Edelin separated placenta, halting the abortion to ensure suffocation. Edelin and two nurses, plus a medical student, testified to the fetus likely being dead before surgery. witnesses debated whether delay occurred.
