Bastion Block Demolition Planned At Williams College
Williams College trustees vote to raze the Bastion Block on Spring Street in two stages starting next month. The plan removes the Bastion Block portion housing Ron's Barber Shop, Square Deal Store, and an upstairs apartment, while leaving the Williams News room and Richard Gold jewelry store intact. The north side will be refinished and the building will stay on the tax rolls for now, with full demolition postponed to a later date. The block, built as a residence in 1846, later became a grocery and was acquired by the college in 1954.
