Truck and Bus Group Backs Vermont Sales Tax

The Vermont Truck and Bus Association endorsed a 2 percent general sales tax to fund a $34 million accelerated highway program in the state. Executive manager Robert Fitzgerald said the plan uses 100 percent state funds, shifting from prior 50-50 federal matching, with revenues partly for highways, education, and towns. He argued highway users and all citizens benefit from faster construction and that sales tax is preferable to a gas tax hike. Rep. Emery Hebard introduced the tax proposal.
