Shaftsbury Tax Committee Recommends Local Appraisal Reform
Shaftsbury residents receive a report from the property tax study committee detailing a plan to use a state recommended card and guide book appraisal system. Local listers could perform the work at about one third the cost of outside appraisers, with two listers on duty and a third as alternate. The committee notes current assessments are far below fair market values and that a full appraisal may reduce the tax rate by aligning grand list with market values. The report also cautions that an appraisal does not guarantee tax increases. The full town report will include the findings.
