Misjudgments toppled Sorensen CIA nomination drama
A detailed reconstruction shows Theodore Sorensen withdrew from contention to head the CIA after misjudgments by the Carter White House, limited background checks, and political wavering among Senate liberals. Personal conflicts, hesitation by Sorensen, and doubts about his fit overshadowed prior theories of a broad conservative conspiracy. The episode reveals Carter’s cautious early governance and the shift in Senate sentiment toward Kennedy associates.
