Thousands of Negro and Puerto Rican children with white sympathizers joined a one day protest in New York City challenging racial imbalance in schools. About 262000 pupils, 65 percent of minority students, participated as 850 schools stayed open and 2700 pickets appeared outside 300 schools.

Viet Cong guerrillas attacked the Kontum compound housing a detachment of 130 officers and men at 4 30 am. Two guerrillas were killed and a U S officer wounded as Spec 4 Dale D Flinn of Fowler Kansas fired on the intruders and helped defend the building until the assailants fled into darkness. Three others were wounded by the blast and the building burned.
The Vermont Church Council's social action committee urged the legislature to oppose a state run sweepstakes. Rep George Kingston and Rep William Quinn planned to propose the sweepstakes this week. The committee warned gambling harms children families budgets crime and state costs. Other religious groups echoed opposition while Hoff criticized deficit financing but supported studying the sweepstakes option.
Marina Oswald 22, widow of Lee Harvey Oswald, arrives in Washington from Dallas for a secret interrogation by the Warren Commission. Chief Justice Earl Warren leads the session at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building as the commission seeks to fill gaps in the Kennedy assassination chronology. Oswald was killed by a nightclub patron after Kennedy’s death in Dallas.
Laurence H. Barker 63 longtime Banner composing room assistant foreman and former news editor died of a heart attack at his Morgan Heights home. Born Jan 24 1901 in Brattleboro he served The Banner in many printing and news roles for 25 years. He left a stamp collection and Vermont history books. Survivors include wife Marion daughters Rachel and Ann and son James, plus a sister and four grandchildren. Memorial service set for Tuesday at Second Congregational Church. Cremation was in Troy New York. Flowers omitted. donations to the church are requested.
